Powers of 10
*There are lots of neat "powers of 10" videos people have made over the years, showing a person and then zooming in by powers of 10 until you get to the atom, then back out by powers of 10 until you get to the universe.

*Showing one of these videos (such as http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/primer/java/scienceopticsu/powersof10/) might be a good lead-in to an activity for students. Students could use Google Earth to show a close up of a place, and show the scale. For instance, they might start with a car in the school parking lot that is 4 meters long. Then they zoom out and measure 40 meters in the picture, then 400, etc. By using Jing they could capture each scale and label it nicely. They could then use the captured images to create a Photostory.

*Groups of students create a treasure hunt in Google Earth with instructions to go north, south, east, west, by various amounts given in scientific notation. The groups would have some kind of marker placed in Google earth on the spot and save the Google earth file. Then another group would try to follow the directions (using the line tool) and would know if they did it correctly if they end up in the same spot and find the marker.

Directions might look like:

Go N 1 x 10^15 nm
Go E 3 x 10^-12 Tm
Go S 8 x 10^5 cm
